Blaze from left-hand powerplant captured in video images.
LATAM Airlines Peru is describing as an “unforeseen technical event” the serious engine fire which affected an Airbus A320 preparing for departure from Lima.
The occurrence involving flight LA2302 to Piura took place on 19 October.
Video images circulating on social media, purporting to capture the event, show a large external fire from the rear of the jet’s left-hand engine, enveloping parts of the wing and trailing-edge control surfaces, and possibly affecting its main landing-gear.
“Our teams promptly activated the safety protocols and the passengers disembarked safely and correctly, following established procedures,” says the carrier.
“The causes of this event are being investigated in accordance with the corresponding procedures.”
It has not detailed the extent of damage to the jet.
LATAM Airlines Peru says the safety of passengers and crew is its “highest priority” in all its operations.
Passengers from the aircraft were rebooked on a subsequent flight to Piura, it adds.
LATAM has not confirmed the airframe identity or engine type, although the aircraft appears to have CFM International CFM56 powerplants.
